According to a statement issued by the rescuers, a 19-year-old hiker was rescued after being stranded overnight in subzero temperatures on “extremely precarious” ledge 13,000 feet up in the Rocky Mountains. Rocky Mountain National Park mentioned in a press release that Samuel Frappier, from Quebec, was descending from the summit of Longs Peak in Colorado when he became stranded on Tuesday afternoon. The statement added that he was finally taken from the mountainside after what the release called a “significant technical rescue” that included assistance from a helicopter.

During the operation, Frappier remained in contact with rescuers via his cellphone. He and a friend were ascending Longs Peak, a 14,249-foot peak, from the western side of Chasm Lake via Lambs Slide when they became separated. According to his partner, Frappier is inexperienced in climbing or mountaineering and was dressed in cotton clothes and sneakers. Thankfully, Frappier was uninjured but “not prepared to spend the night.”

According to the press release explained that “winter conditions exist above 9,000 feet with significant snow and ice. Fortunately there was no moisture overnight. Overnight temperatures were in the 30s.” A total of 28 rescuers were involved in the overall comprehensive operation. The rescue team encountered numerous hazards during the operation including active ice and rock fall. Conclusively, Frappier was taken to Estes Park Medical Center for evaluation via ambulance after being rescued at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
