Akshay Kumar’s PadMan should release on Women’s Day 2018

Akshay Kumar does multiple films and most of the times, the release date of his films is fixed, especially of those movies that have gone on floors. The release date of Toilet – Ek Prem Katha was scheduled for August 11 long back. His ambitious trilingual 2.0 was to release on Diwali this year but it was then postponed to Republic Day 2018. His sports biopic Gold, directed by Reema Kagti, is also planned for a release on Independence Day next year. Hence, it’s surprising to know that PadMan, a film that Akshay Kumar finished shooting for a few months ago, hasn’t got a release date yet.

Akshay Kumar recently said that he completed PadMan in May. “I have actually completed PadMan, 2.0 and 50% of Gold. We don’t have a release date in place for PadMan because no one has left a date for us. Everyone has blocked dates for release of their films.”

Akshay Kumar also opened up about clash of films that have happened recently with Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay during Diwali last year and Raees and Kaabil on Republic Day earlier this year. Toilet – Ek Prem Katha too was to clash with Jab Harry Met Sejal, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma. But better sense prevailed and the release date of Jab Harry Met Sejal was preponed by a week. The love story is now all set to release on August 4. Reacting to this development, he said, “Everybody is happy when films don’t clash but we need to realize that there are just 52 weeks in a year wherein over 180 films release. So someone has to clash with someone else. It is very unfortunate that clashes happen, but they are a part and parcel of our industry.”

It remains to be seen if PadMan gets a solo release or it clashes with some other film. However, Akshay Kumar’s statement that all significant dates have been blocked is not entirely true. Yes, films in 2018 have been scheduled for holidays like Republic Day (2.0), Holi (Drive), Independence Day (Gold), Diwali (Thugs Of Hindiostan) and Christmas (Shah Rukh Khan’s untitled next directed by Aanand L Rai). But the rest of the Fridays are open. In fact, there’s no film scheduled for Women’s Day weekend in March. Akshay Kumar should definitely release PadMan during this time. Women’s Day falls on March 8, which is on Thursday next year. Maybe, paid previews and ‘ladies-only’ screenings can be held on this day while a regular release can be done from Friday March 9. It also goes well with the film’s theme, moreover.

PadMan is inspired by the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who began producing cost effective sanitary napkins for the women in rural areas. It is directed by R Balki and co-stars Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor. It is co-produced by Twinkle Khanna.
