Stars often get criticised of doing too little and when they do, then they are accused of doing too much and for publicity. Today Bollywood and the South film industry is united and stands-shoulder-to-shoulder to contribute to the state which has been affected heavily because of heavy rains, floods and landslides. And yet all have done it quietly and with dignity, without commotion or publicising their actions at all.

Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Sonam Kapoor, AR Rahman, Vidya Balan’s PROMPT GOLDEN HEARTED gesture for Kerala!

While Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, AR Rahman, Sonam Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Shah Rukh Khan, Vidya Balan and her husband Siddharth Roy Kapur have all quietly in their individual ways contributed to the Kerala Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF), others including Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar and others, took to social media to persuade everyone to donate to the Chief Minister’s fund for the aid of the flood-hit people. Amitabh Bachchan, AR Rahman, Sonam Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Shah Rukh Khan, Vidya Balan and her husband Siddharth Roy Kapur contributed at the request of Academy Award winner, film sound designer, sound editor and mixer when Resul Pookutty sent them a request.

Akshay Kumar called up filmmaker Priyadarshan and told him he wanted to do this. Priyadarshan who was on his way to meet the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, when we spoke to him in the morning told us, “I am personally handing over the money collected from everybody. I was quite surprised when Akshay called himself and said he’s contributing too. I was surprised because he has nothing to do with Kerala and it’s a wonderful gesture. The best part is that Akshay reached out on his own and said he wants to do this – I didn’t have to ask him. He sent me Rs. 25 lakh and said that this was the first instalment. Akshay added that he would send me one more instalment when they decide to rebuild the state. I informed the Chief Minister also that I am coming with Akshay’s money. During the Chennai floods too Akshay had given one crore for its relief and rehabilitation.”

It’s a time when Bollywood and the South movie industry have come together once again to help their fellow countrymen. Priyadarshan adds, “People from South film industry too are trying their best to help. It’s great to see our movie industries all coming together to help Kerala!

Priyadarshan, whose next movie, a fantasy adventure, Marakkar: The Lion of Arabian Sea, starts from November this year, says sadly, “Kerala is in very bad shape right now… Except Trivandrum all the districts are under water, airports under water and some like Calicut is even closed down, the roads are in disrepair.”

Resul Pookuttya posted on social media, “I have personally reached out to most of them @SrBachchan @iamsrk and @arrahman were quick to react and we are consolidating our fare share of help to #Keralafloods and my fraternity says #istandwithkerala I’m humbled! Thank you so much!” He also thanked Sonam Kapoor and Vidya Balan and her husband, movie producer Siddharth Roy Kapoor for their kindness and generosity.

Shah Rukh Khan had responded, “Sir, it’s the Duty & Dharma of each one of us to stand by our brothers & sisters in times of need. May Allah bless each & everyone in Kerala.”
