However, it has turned out to be less than fruitful this year, what with only Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani turning out to be a blockbuster success. After a biggie like Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 failing to create any ripples, the industry is hoping that the combination of Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan brings back some smiles next week.

"Yes, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has done terrific business and its total of around Rs. 175 crores is mighty impressive and the sole reason why exhibitors have managed to stay afloat. Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have managed to entice the youth but the combined power of Deols only ended up disappointing most," says an insider, "A bunch of youngsters in Farhan Akhtar-Ritesh Sidhwani's Fukrey have managed to bring in some footfalls but there was no 'dhamaka' in the opening. Vikram Bhatt's Ankur Arora Murder Case which, though appreciated, hasn't done well at all commercially."

No wonder, with Emraan and Vidya coming together after The Dirty Picture, industry is hoping that there would be a turnaround next week with Ghanchakkar. Incidentally, the film is produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Vidya's hubby Siddharth Roy Kapur for UTV.

"Emraan carries a tremendous fan following and whenever he has played to the gallery, his films have worked," says an observer, "Even a niche Ek Thi Daayan took a decent opening and now Ghanchakkar is aimed at the masses. Also, Vidya is coming more than a year after her rather serious Kahaani. She is really having fun and her naughty act as an 'over the top' Punjabi woman could well be a turn on for her fans."

Emraan's last biggie Raaz 3, which was a mainstream commercial film, had turned out to be his biggest first day opener till then. On being asked whether box office numbers indeed matter to him, Emraan said, "Of course I want my new films to do better than my last ones. At the end of the day, you are known for your box office success and I won't pretend that I feel otherwise."

Says Siddharth Roy Kapur, Managing Director – Studios, Disney UTV, "It's been a while since such a film has hit the theatres. Emraan and Vidya are of course actors par excellence and they are fantastic in this film. Ghanchakkar has been brilliantly directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, who after Aamir and No One Killed Jessica has certainly become one of the directors to watch out for. Ghanchakkar has dollops of humour, suspense and drama in a plot that will keep audiences guessing all the way through. It is an out-an-out entertainer."
