The actor is a brand ambassador of Kolkata and even owns the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders and hence he was invited to attend the show. Shah Rukh Khan who was excited to be a part of this show, not only interacted with the officials, but also danced with one of them, a lady Sub Inspector Sampa Haldar.

This however led to a major controversy. From former police officials to politicians, many claimed that it was unethical and against the Constitution for an officer to dance with any superstar on stage wearing a uniform. As a response to these drastic comments, an upset superstar Shah Rukh Khan has reverted saying it's completely strange. He also recollected memories of his previous film Veer-Zara (starring Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji) that talks about love across borders, and mentioned that he had danced with jawans in uniform during the shoot of the film. The actor also gave an example of the 60s and 70s when actors performed at the border to encourage jawans. In fact, Shah Rukh Khan pointed out that this was not about any officer but a lady officer dancing on stage and miffed with this kind of response, he stated that the kind of distinction being made between men and women is rubbish and silly.

Shah Rukh Khan had danced with police officer Sampa Haldar on the famous Bollywood number from his film Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Since it was held during the festive season of Raksha Bandhan, Mamata Banerjee also tied a rakhi to Shah Rukh Khan on stage amidst the audience.

However, the criticisms did not end only on the police officer and even Mamata Banerjee faced the music for inviting Bollywood stars for the events and shows happening in Kolkata.
