If you’re like us, your closet probably consists mostly of basics…but what happens when you want to set the bar a little (or a lot!) higher (hello, NYFW)? Oftentimes, knowing how to anchor your outfit with a few basics in order to let your one-of-a-kind pieces sing is just as important a skill as any. And, who better to show us just how to take three basics to the Fashion Week tents than our favorite street-style stars? Photogs, get ready!

CHALLENGE: The White T-Shirt

Daphne Javitch, designer of TEN undies, stylist

What was your philosophy in putting your outfit together around your plain white T-shirt?
“It’s more of a habit than a philosophy…I collect white T-shirts and wear everything with them.”

Is there one item you find yourself pulling out time and time again for Fashion Week?
“My sweatpants as soon as I get home!”

Daphne wears a Kenzo jacket, a vintage white T-shirt, Céline pants, Manolo Blahnik shoes.

You’re at your favorite NYFW show, and your two favorite people ever are sitting to your left and right. What’s the show and who are they?
“I’m at Band of Outsiders sitting between my best friend, Ezra Woods, and my sweetheart, Pali Xisto. Can Joan Didion be there, too?”

CHALLENGE: The Black Trouser

Jessica Minkoff, associate market editor atMarie Claire

What was your philosophy in putting your outfit together around your black trousers?
“Layering is key when dealing with simple everyday essentials like black trousers. I love pairing patterned Equipment blouses with chunky sweaters like this one from Tibi. I try to channel my personal style through my accessories — I have a weakness for shoes, so these Proenza Schouler heels were a no-brainer.”

Jessica wears a Helmut Lang jacket, a Tibi sweater, an Equipment shirt, Alexander Wang pants, and Proenza Schouler shoes and bag.

Is there one item you find yourself pulling out time and time again for Fashion Week?
“My Proenza Schouler PS11 bag. In my opinion, it is the perfect bag. I love the silver hardware and the grainy leather, plus it’s the perfect size for me to fit everything I need to carry, including my wallet, camera, cell phone, and notepad.”

Jessica’s rings are by Hermès, Eddie Borgo, Repossi x Zadig et Voltaire, and Tiffany.

You’re at your favorite NYFW show, and your two favorite people ever are sitting to your left and right. What’s the show and who are they?
“Choosing the show is easy — Proenza Schouler. But choosing my favorite people? That’s tough. I guess one of them would be my mom. She is definitely my favorite shopping buddy (our closets are very similar). The other would be Gaia Repossi, one of my style icons. I would just want to hear her thoughts on all the runway looks and see what pieces she was coveting for the next season.”

What’s your go-to, regular-day uniform?
“At the office, you will always find me in some variation of a pant — I love cropped trousers, wide-leg jeans, and leather skinnies — with sweaters and leather jackets. I tend to plan my outfits around my shoes (weird, I know), but I start at the bottom and work my way up.”

What’s the best thing you’ve bought lately?
“I was obsessed with the woven Proenza Schouler heels when I saw them on the runway last year. I told myself I had to have them — but when I saw the retail price, I never thought I would get my hands on them. When they went on sale, I couldn’t resist. Those heels and a pair of Isabel Marant Bayley sneakers are the best purchases as of late.”

CHALLENGE: The Boyfriend Jean

Eleonora Carisi, blogger at Jou Jou Villeroy

What was your philosophy in putting your outfit together around your jeans?
“I love to mix and match! Being daring is the key. It’s easy to pull out a great look if you wear basic items like jeans. I think the biggest key is to wear something that has a story….and my pair of 501s have a lot of stories to tell!”

Eleonora wears Dsquared2 sunglasses, a Gucci bag, Gianvito Rossi shoes, Levi’s 501s, and a Suno pajama shirt.

You’re at your favorite NYFW show, and your two favorite people ever are sitting to your left and right. What’s the show and who are they?
“This year will be my first time in NYFW, and I’d love to see Ralph Lauren. I’m curious to get to know Alexa Chung, so I want her to my left, and to my right, I want my friend Bryan Boy there so I can talk to him about the show!”

What’s your go-to, regular-day uniform?
“It’s always the same. Skinny black jeans, creepers, and an oversized vintage pullover. Comfy!”

What’s the best thing you’ve bought lately?
“Can you imagine that I don’t go to shopping much? I love fashion, but I prefer style more! The best thing I’ve bought is something for my new home. I’ve got a furniture obsession!”
