Trains carrying over 2,000 returnees from Khartoum arrived in the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State capital Aweil last Friday amid jubilation from residents.

One of the trains proceeded to Wau in the neighbouring Western Bahr el Ghazal State on Saturday morning.

The long awaited return of the South Sudanese from the north was great news to their fellow countrymen who welcomed them with song and dance at the Aweil railway station.

A returnee told Gurtong that she was happy to be back home after facing numerous obstacles during the grueling journey.

“I am happy to be home even after the Sudan Armed Forces looted our food as we travelled here”, said the unidentified woman.
