This comes after a delegation from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining together with journalists last Saturday toured the area after it was bombed on Wednesday afternoon by a fighter plane.
At least one oil well has been damaged and cows killed in an air strike that hit Elnar oil field in Unity State, an area in South Sudan.
According to security sources in the area, 5 bombs were dropped with one Damaging Elnar 8 and another affecting Elnar 5. Though journalists only confirmed three bombings, the security insisted there were other two.
The Christmas tree of Elnar 8 has been damaged and the oil line, a damage which technicians from Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company (GNPOC) said is yet to be assessed.
The oil spills at Elnar 5 are said to have been caused by pressure as a result of the Emergency Shutdown Bulb (ESB), a technical term referring to the abrupt machines switch off.
The technicians revealed that they were flashing the wells to keep it clean after the shutdown of the oil when the plane bombed it.
The GNPOC technician who spoke on anonymity said that the damage would have been more serious if it landed on the pipeline and worse if it landed on the field processing facility which is just a few meters from where the bombs landed.
Meanwhile the Director General for Petroleum, Mohamed Lino Benjamin who led the delegation said that the loss caused as a result of the bomb will be assessed by the technicians.
He said that many people will have different interpretations on the air raid but it was surely ill intended.
However, he added that the company will clean the spills to keep the place clean, a work which is estimated to take two weeks and beyond.
Nevertheless, the damage is severe in the lay man’s eyes which are likely to cause a lump sum of money.
Reports got on the ground are controversial with some eye witnesses claiming only 4 cows were killed by the air strike while the area chief, Sultan Miakol Lual claims 30 cows were killed.
The chief further appealed for medical assistance saying that they and their cows are vomiting as a result of the air raid.
You look like you sprayed that area with oil, so neat and tcomment_IDy, i saw the clips on Tv, how can a bomb make a small hole like that. This is all lies and propaganda. That greedy chief – what are cows doing in a secure oil installation and vomiting – please you make me vomit !
