According to Aguer, 259 forces were shot between April 10th and 14th when SAF allegedly attacked in Heglig, an oil rich contested region.

“In the battles since April 10th SPLA has lost 19 soldiers and 32 wounded. SAF lost 240 and they have many wounded. We also captured 14,” Col. Philip Aguer said.  

“SAF is trying to advance from Karasana (50 kilometres from Heglig) that is North of Heglig they are at a distance between Heglig and Karasana. Our forces (SPLA) are patrolling the area,” Aguer said. 

Efforts to independently verify the toll was impossible though yesterday SPLA paraded the 14 SAF captives to the press in Juba. 

Meanwhile Aguer also said tensions are mounting in Western Bahr el Ghazal State. 

The two sides have continued clashing despite international calls to retreat from the front line. 

These latest hostilities have jeopardized diplomatic relations between the two countries as Sudan pulled out of the post secession talks with South Sudan in Addis Ababa.  

UNMISS statement about the bombing in Unity and Warrap States

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is concerned about the continued aerial bombing in areas populated by civilians in Unity and Warrap States. Security Council resolution 1996 (2011) calls on UNMISS to protect civilians under imminent threat of physical violence. 

“The loss of civilian lives as a result of indiscriminate bombings in Bentiu and Mayom is unacceptable,” said Hilde F. Johnson, UNMISS Special Representative to the Secretary-General.” “It is the responsibility of the parties to hostilities to respect the physical integrity of civilians and their right to live without fear of displacement,” she added.

Over the weekend, UNMISS confirmed several bombings, including five bombs that dropped in Mayom town yesterday evening, where a UN Mission’s County Support Base was hit. As a result of these bombings, 8 civilians were killed and 22 were injured.

“I call on both parties to abide by international human rights and humanitarian law, protect civilians and guarantee the safety of international aid organizations and United Nations personnel and assets,” said SRSG Johnson.
