The Lakes State Minister of Information and Communication Charles Badiri Mayen said the move is aimed at accommodating the high increase of students at senior secondary school level.

“The State Government realised that many pupils who sat for their primary leaving certificate cannot be accommodated in the few secondary schools available. The students at senior secondary level need adequate classrooms and quality teachers”, said Mayen.

He noted that the government has responded by upgrading Riak-dor, Akot, Pachong and Nyang schools following consultations with the national government.

Mayen clarified that the names of the schools will not be changed and that the community’s views will be sought before making any such changes.

“Rumbek Town Secondary School was merged with Riak-dor Secondary School and therefore the school was named Riak-dor Secondary School and not Rumbek”, said Mayen.

There were allegations that the state government had changed the historic name of Riak-dor secondary into Rumbek Town Secondary School.
