Generation Agency for Development and Transformation- Pentagon (GADET – Pentagon) Executive Director Taban A. Christopher says that land has been one of the issues derailing development in the new country.

Taban was addressing a press conference at the South Sudan Women Union office in Juba.

“We appeal for the review and amendment of the Southern Sudan land policies and legislation immediately,” he stated.

According to the group, enacting the land policies into laws will discourage conflicts that come with land and ensure development in the country.

Barely one year old, the new country faces serious land issues that have even cost lives and the civil society thinks this could be the only way to harmonies land issues.

The activists also called for a review of the Land Act 2009. In chapter 3, Section 78 (1-5); (4) states that any claimant shall have a right to submit a request to regain the right in this section within three years of commencement of this act.

The group has called for the extension of the period to more than ten years.

Taban disclosed that they have presented their recommendations to the concerned authorities including parliament, the vice presidents’ office and the land commission.
