Strong wet weather and heavy flooding had destroyed and washed away crops but a survey in Eastern Equatoria State indicates that home-grown crops like groundnuts have come out decently well.

Most areas that witnessed heavy rainfall are likely to have low crop yield due to frequent wetting and flooding during ripening time.

The local subsistence farmers, especially those planting peanuts said this year will mark the highest yields than ever before.

Already some farmers have started harvesting peanuts in parts of Torit.

“Eastern Equatoria will have some good peanuts harvest.  I have witnessed in my farm which is just around ripping period and I have seen a positive record of great yield levels,” Flora Ikoli, a peanut farmer said.

Compared to 2011, this year will probably have minimum food shortage in some places of the state.

Some areas face food shortages caused by heavy rains or drought.

A field survey carried out by the Gurtong in Eastern Equatoria last week indicates that farmers in Lopit area are expecting high yields while parts of Ikwoto County around Hiyala Payam were most affected by the heavy rains.

The unpredictable weather conditions means that farmers need to adapt accordingly and change their planting routines if they are to increase on crop yields.
