During the visit, the Director of Human Rights Division and Representative of the High Commission for Human Rights Richard Bennett said that the government need to investigate further and follow up on the report that was released in August about human rights violation in Jonglei during the disarmament process.

Lawrence Korbandy said they exchanged ideas answered some of the questions that the governor had requested concerning the report on the human rights situation in the state.

He said that necessary action needs to be taken against those responsible for the violations

“We give them our points of view which were very good and I think we have benefited from this meeting,” he said.

He added that they have recommended the extension of the committee so that they can conclude their findings on the human rights report.

“We cannot say the report is 100 per cent because we have not done verification. Verification means you have to go around on the ground and verify what is in the report,” he said.

He said that they were impressed by the fact that the governor speaks strongly in favour of human rights and understands human rights.
