The minister said that poor pay and irregular salary payment to teachers sometimes make teachers not to teach to concentrate on their profession.

“How can they sustain themselves without a salary for example due to irregular payment?” asked Wuor Jwok, “I will make sure this case is raised to the council of ministers.”

The schools have also been lacking adequate learning spaces and this causes overcrowding of pupils in classes.

“It’s giving meaningless education,” he said.

The minister also said that lack of transport for the teacher also affects the quality of education provision as most of the residential areas are located at a distant place from the schools.

“We have already announced now for the recruitment of teachers and their selection will be based on their quality certificates they will present,” said the Director General in the Ministry of Education Luol Ruoi Dhol.

“I think we must say that there is little improvement because this year the percentage that passed were 65.4% compared to last year which had 56% pupils passed,” the minister said.

The minister said that its ministry will exert much effort to see that the education system is improved.

“We are working hard to make sure our teachers get good capacity building for them to effectively give good lessons,” he said.

“We want the community to also help us to participate in improving the learning of pupils through checking their books as they go back home and tell them to read,” he said.

The minister also urged teacher’s to start with present books and later they will use the new books about to arrive in the state once they are brought.

“The difference between [the] old books and the new books is slight,” he said.

Upper Nile schools opened earlier this year due to the change of calendar from April 1 to February 1.
