India’s commercial capital Mumbai (Bombay) was the scene of three near-simultaneous bomb explosions at around 7pm local time. Information is sketchy and reports are conflicting however some are placing the numbers at ten people killed and more than 100 wounded. News outlets are saying that one explosion was reported in the Zaveri Bazaar, another in the Opera House business district and a third in Dadar district. The home ministry was quoted as saying the explosions were a terrorist attack and police sources are saying the explosions were caused by home-made bombs.

This would represent the first major attack on Mumbai since 10 militants laid siege to India’s financial capital for 60 hours in November 2008. That attack, which targeted two luxury hotels, a Jewish center and a busy train station, left 166 people dead and was blamed on Pakistan-based militant groups. The attacks escalated tensions between Pakistan and India and prompted them to suspend peace talks.
