32 dead as Darjeeling’s bridge collapses

According to reports as many as 32 people have been pronounced dead in the wake of the Darjeeling Bridge that collapsed which also left 132 people injured. There 32 casualties include 6 children.

Many locals are of the opinion that the Bridge was weakened by the Earthquake that struck Darjeeling in September. Early reports also suggest that the victims that were present on the bridge at the time of the collapse and they fell at atleast 70ft into the fast flowing Rangeet Khola river.

The rescue efforts are underway with the fire brigade, police and army proving a helping hand to the residents and in the process rescued 60 people.

Moments before the bridge collapsed a large number of people gathered on it for the GJM meeting. They had gathered on the bridge to listen to speeches by leaders of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) party.

GJM General Secretary Roshan Giri later said “A cultural programme was being held on one side of the bridge, while a meeting was being held on the other. Too many people were standing on it when it collapsed and they fell into the river below.”
