According to the report by police, the 21- year old woman named Payal Bhalchandani suggested the idea to kidnap the boy, son of a city-based hotelier, to her boyfriend to help him overcome heavy debt caused by cricket betting.
The boy, Aditya, son of Bharat Bhalchandani who owns Hotel Mansarovar in Maninagar area, was rescued by Ahmedabad Police’s Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) on Tuesday night within hours of the kidnapping. Crime Branch officials arrested Payal Bhalchandani, her boyfriend Nishant Shethi, Dhwanik Shah and Devendra Shukla and and recovered the ransom money that was paid to track them.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Shukla said, “Shethi has confessed to have lost around Rs 10 lakh in cricket betting. And it was Payal who suggested him to kidnap Aditya to demand ransom since her uncle was rich. And accordingly she handed over Aditya to the accused on Tuesday evening near Paldi.”
“The intentions of the accused were very serious because they were determined to kill Aditya irrespective of the fact whether they get the ransom money or not. They wanted to conceal their identity since Aditya had recognized them,” he added.
Shukla told reporters that around 7 pm Tuesday, Payal took Aditya out on her two-wheeler, saying she had to attend some errand. Around 9 pm, Bharat got a call from one of the accused, informing him that Aditya and Payal had been kidnapped. After initially demanding Rs 1 crore ransom, the accused settled the deal at Rs 50 lakh.
