A police station in Meerut has filed an FIR against the MP of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sakshi Maharaj, who made several objectionable remarks on Saturday on the topic of population control. The case was filed under section 298 of IPC because Sakshi made a veiled attack on the Muslim community earlier on Friday and blamed them for the population explosion in the country.
In his remarks, Sakshi stated that “those with four wives and 40 children are responsible for the population increase in the country. Hindus are not responsible for the increase in population,” adding that “strict laws are required in this country if we really want to curb population. Parties need to rise above politics and take decision for the sake of the country.” The controversial remarks were made by the MP during a rally in Uttar Pradesh and have since received strong condemnation from opposition parties.
The Election Commission has sought a report from the Meerut district administration while the BJP distanced itself from the statement. The Chief Electoral Officer in Lucknow mentioned in a statement that “the commission has sought a report from the Meerut administration in connection with the statement issued by Sakshi Maharaj yesterday.” Meanwhile, Congress leader KC Mittal alleged that Sakshi’s speech is “offensive” because it is based on caste and religion and goes against the recent Supreme Court judgement. He claimed that “it is a violation of the Model Code of Conduct and Congress is officially filing a complaint against him in the Election Commission.”
