Leader of Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, and the leader of Congress party, Rahul Gandhi, joined hands and announced their electoral alliance in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh in a joint press conference held today. The two leaders declared that their alliance is aimed “to defeat the politics of anger and divisiveness” of the opposition BJP. According to the two young leaders, they “are friends and not just political allies” and that the two parties “share much of each other’s ideologies” and goals.

However, Rahul refrained from confirming whether a similar alliance will be formed with the SP for the 2019 elections. The SP leader and chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh, stressed that he was happy to work side by side with Rahul and boasted that “we’ve been together in the Lok Sabha, too.” He hoped that the alliance will win 300 of the 403 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. According to Akhilesh, “if the hand is with the cycle, and the cycle is with the hand, imagine the speed,” referring to his party’s ‘cycle’ symbol and the Congress party’s ‘hand’ symbol. He mentioned that “we (Rahul and I) are the two wheels of the cycle.”

Whereas on the other hand, Rahul reciprocated Akhilesh with his “meeting of rivers” analog. The Congress leader elucidated that “have you been to the ‘sangam’ in Allahabad? We, the SP and the Congress, are like the Ganga and Yamuna. When we get together, the Saraswati of development will emerge.”
