Manpreet Singh BadalThe fierce and high-pitched political battle in this part of Punjab is getting more interesting with another member of the Badal clan jumping into the heat and dust of election campaign.

People’ Party of Punjab supremo Manpreet Badal’s son Arjun Badal has stepped on to the hard terrain of Punjab hinterland to canvass for his father. The family’s two generations are already in the political battle ground. With another Badal set to rise on the political horizon, three generations will be simultaneously working overtime to keep control of the all-important assembly constituency of Gidderbaha, earlier represented by Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Clad in white khadi and a Basanti (yellow) scarf around the neck, the SUV-driving 17-year old, Arjun, who has come to Punjab on a vacation, is trying to make an impact on villagers, meeting them in a simple manner, like his father. A fluent English speaker, Arjun interacts in chaste Punjabi with residents here, starting the talk with “Sat Sri Akal” (mode of greeting in Punjabi). “He may to be too young to start political innings but the way he tries to handle things and illiterate villagers makes him a hot political stuff”, said an aide.
