The journalist has been arrested for allegedly giving details like Mr. Dey’s motorcycle registration number and his address to fugitive underworld don Chhota Rajan, who is accused of masterminding the murder.
The arrest has been made under provisions of the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA). Jigna Vora will be tried for murder and conspiracy like the other accused in the case and will be present before the special MCOCA court today, the police said.
The Crime Branch has in its possession telephone conversation purportedly between Chhota Rajan and some others claiming that the journalist had provided information, police sources said.
The Crime Branch claims that they have other incriminating call records which go against the journalist who has been arrested.
Police had recorded the journalist’s statement twice in the past.
A close associate of Chhota Rahan, Joseph, is also in the custody of Mumbai Police for his alleged involvement in the killing of senior journalist J Dey.
The police have so far arrested 11 persons in the case, including sharp shooter Satish Kalia and cricket bookie Vinod Asrani alias Vinod Chembur. The police had slapped MCOCA charges on the accused on July 8.
