Public Service Division (PSD) announced on Monday that all political office holders including ministers will receive a bonus worth 1.6 months’ salary in the month of March as national bonus.

The beneficiaries of the national bonus include all political office holders from the Parliament’s Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister. The bonus has been announced in respect to the resolution passed by the parliament in January replacing the GDP bonus. The resolution stated that all political office holders will be paid a bonus directly related to the economic growth of the country as there is a direct link between socio-economic progress of the lower income class of Singapore and the salaries of the political office holders. The recommendation accepted by the parliament was endorsed as “Salaries of a Capable and Committed Government”.

As per the formula approved by the parliament to derive the national bonus, the bonus for 2011 calculates to 2.6 months. However, since the new salaries came into effect from 21st May 2011, the average bonus comes down to 1.6 months.

The announcement made by PSD said, “All political appointment holders will get the same National Bonus rate to reflect their joint contributions as part of the Cabinet. The Prime Minister will get twice the rate as he does not get a performance bonus.”
