Defence Minister of India A K Antony spoke before the parliament on Tuesday and said that he had asked the Army Chief to take action upon the bribe offer but he declined and said “I refuse to pursue the matter”.

Antony was questioned in the Rajya Sabha this morning as to why did he not take action on the information provided by the Army Chief to which he accepted that the bribe offer made to the concerned officer was in his knowledge. He clarified his position saying that the Army Chief for sure had informed him of the incident and he had advised the chief to take action upon it but he did not do so for unknown reason and therefore did not file a written complaint and he could not have taken action without a formal complaint being filed. He further said that the CBI inquiry he initiated yesterday was on account of a report published in a newspaper.

He also agreed that Army Chief had informed him that the lobbyist who offered him the bribe was retired General Tajender Singh and said that “I was shocked. It took me one to two minutes to regain my composure. Then I told him to take action but he told me I do not want to pursue it. I don’t know why he did not want to pursue it at that time.”
