The Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed announced on Thursday that the final revised proposal for National Automotive Policy (NAP) will be submitted to cabinet soon.
He said that the final draft of the proposal is underway and almost complete so there is little time before it is submitted to the cabinet. The draft includes points raised by various parties in the discussion and dialogue sessions which were conducted and the conclusion of the final draft of NAP takes into account all of the recommendations proposed.
Speaking about the draft of NAP at the launch of a student forum in Putrajaya, Mustapa said, “We’ve done our consultations. This time around, it was an extensive one where it included all branches from the car companies, to vendors, banks and the consumers. We will be presenting the papers to the Cabinet soon.”
He also mentioned that the revised final draft of NAP incorporates feedback from various sources therefore the proposal is destined to absolutely change the local automotive landscape in a positive manner allowing the market to be liberalized and open.
He said, “The main two areas which the government is giving attention to in the NAP are ways to enhance competitiveness of local car makers and encourage investments in the energy efficient vehicle segment. Even now our market is open with some 20 per cent of cars in Malaysia currently are completely-built-up cars. Through this NAP, it will open more because the government is looking to sign free trade agreements with countries like Japan, Korea and Australia by 2015. The revision of the policy will reflect in better participation of the foreign stake holders.”
