Khairy calls for removal of polling agents

MP of Rembau Khairy Jamaluddin spoke to the media on Wednesday night and expressed that he supported the Election Offences Act Amendment Bill which was passed on the parliament sitting in a hurry as he said that it allowed safeguards to a certain extend.

He also said that polling agents can still hamper the process as they can identify the voters and they have the knowledge regarding which voter voted whom irrespective of the passed amendment. He said that during the course of the amendment, he had voted for the removal of polling agents from the voting system as there have been complaints regarding voting agents in the past as well and it is a loop which can create trouble in the future as well. He spoke to the media after his meeting with the co-chairperson of Bersih Ambiga Sreenevasan.

He said, “In the last general election, the polling agents although I’m not sure from which parties, were telling the EC clerks what to do. They were campaigning and telling voters whom to vote for.”

Khairy said that during the meeting he reminded the Bersih that one of the parts of the amendment still needs attention which is regarding the eligibility of the polling agents to enter polling centers.
