The King of Saudi Arabia has granted three-month reprieve to overseas Filipino worker Joselito Zapanta. The Vice President and Presidential Advisor for OFW Concerns, Jejomar Binay announced on Tuesday that the King has allowed deterring the execution of Zapanta.

“Because the King of Saudi Arabia has delayed the executions, Joselito Zapanta has been given a three-month reprieve,” said Binay.

Binay said the news has also been confirmed by Adbulaziz Abdulrahman Al Gaeit, the Assistant of the Undersecretary for Public Rights of the Emir’s Office. Zapanta’s reprieve would start today and will end after three months, on June 8, 2013. Binay clarified that the extension does not imply that the deadline set for Zapanta’s family to pay the blood money has also been deterred.

“The family of the victim has no decision on this matter and our embassy will try to work also for the extension of the deadline for the payment of blood money… His benevolence has given our kababayan a three month lease on life, and his family additional time to raise the blood money. We also wish to thank the Emir’s Office for their efforts in facilitating the amicable settlement and forgiveness, as well as the extension of the deadlines, allowing the maximum period for the settlement of the amount,” said Binay.

According to Muslim laws, a payment of blood money can be paid to the victim’s family to spare the convict from death penalty. It was learnt that Philippines President Benigno Aquino III and Zapanta’s mother, Maymona, both wrote to King Abdullan on March 9 to show leniency.

“In the past month, our embassy has worked non-stop to find ways to again extend the deadline for the payment of blood money and possibly to even lower the amount being demanded,” Binay said earlier in a statement.
