Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal will request Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today (Monday) to commute the death sentence of Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar to life imprisonment. The veteran SAD leader is apprehending that hanging Bhullar could impair peace in Punjab.

“Both Badals will meet the Prime Minister tomorrow (Monday) to seek commutation of death sentence of Bullar to life imprisonment,” HS Bains political advisor on national affairs to Badal said in Chandigarh on Sunday.

The Supreme Court of India has already rejected Bhullar’s mercy petition; however, the government authorities are concerned about the consequences of his death-sentence. According to intelligence agencies, Bhullar’s execution will have numerous political consequences. It has been advised to follow court’s order in secrecy, similar to what was done in the case of Ajmal Kasab and Afzal Guru.

Secret executions are aimed at preventing riots and chaos in the city. The Shiromani Akali Dal, the SGPC and various other Sikh organizations are protesting against the court’s verdict and pressurizing the government to commute Bhullar’s death sentence into a life term.

Both the provincial and federal governments are now weighing the pros and cons of executing him secretly in the Tihar jail. Bhullar is currently receiving help at the Institute of Human Behavior Allied Science (IHBAS). He is soon to be shifted to the Tihar Jail in Delhi.
