Recent polls have shown that the previously elevated fondness for Manmohan Singh in the urban areas of India is now rapidly falling. In 2009, Singh was considered the driving force behind the second consecutive win of UPA; however, the scenario is dramatically changing as Rahul Gandhi has become more popular among the urban class.

According to the results of a CNN-IBN survey, 61 percent of the respondents felt that Manmohan Singh should go and 39 percent of the respondents felt that Rahul Gandhi is his best replacement. The public does not seem content with the performance of UPA government during the last four years of its tenure.

India seems to have changed mood after been governed by Manmohan Singh for nine straight years. The same survey shows that 65 percent of respondents held the PM responsible for the coal blocks scam, 64 percent said his office was involved in the cover-up, and 54 percent said that his performance was either very poor or poor.

A survey conducted by research firm GFK revealed that Delhi and Chennai were not impressed by Singh’s second stint at South Block and half of the respondents in Bangalore believe that his performance in the second term was ‘average’. Nevertheless, 40 percent of the respondents in Chandigarh and Bhopal were satisfied with his work.

UPA-2 will celebrate its fourth birthday tomorrow. However, the government is rapidly losing its credibility among the masses. Increasing cases of corruption and poor performance of the current government has consequently resulted in the increased popularity of Rahul Gandhi, a fact that should be of serious concern to Manmohan Singh.
