Communist rebels attack on Philippines police lorry in Cagayan killed seven personnel and injured eight more. A vehicle carrying elite police Special Action Force on Monday was attacked by communist fighters hiding in the bush along a road in Cataratan.

According to initial reports, a group of 30 armed rebels launched the attack. They detonated explosive devices and opened fire at the lorry. Officials suspect that it was a premeditated and coordinated attack by the New People’s Army.

The incident took place in the wake of recent peace talks suspension brokered by Norway. The rebels refused to acknowledge an immediate ceasefire request which impeded the negotiations.

According to Rodrigo de Gracia, a regional police director, the policemen were overpowered by the rebels, which resulted in their defeat. He suspects the main aim of this attack was to collect weaponry by force. The injured officers were rushed to Ballesteros Municipal Hospital. Police spokesman Generoso Cerbo confirmed that troops installed roadblocks and dispatched reinforcements to trace the attackers.

“With what happened in Cagayan, there’s an order now for all units to maintain a very high standard of alertness and operational readiness,” Cerbo said, adding that units should also review its corresponding defense plans.
