The recent elevation of Gujarat CM Narendra Modi as the election campaign chief has pushed the previously oppressed interparty issues to the surface as an increasing number of BJP veteran politicians have come forward to voice their concerns about the alleged ideological-shift in the party. In the recent chain of events, Nitish Kumar has accused BJP of deceiving its senior party leaders.

Advani is evidently distressed with Modi’s anointment, a decision which implies that Modi will be the prime ministerial candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The event resulted in the split within the NDA with the JD(U). Nitish Kumar alleged that his party has deeply contemplated the decision and it is in its best interest to part ways with NDA.

“Our parting ways from the NDA is BJP’s failure. You created a situation in which the old allies walked away. An alliance does not run under compulsion. If you do not leave any way out before the ally…If any party wants to form a government (at Centre), the responsibility is of that party to get support of other parties if it is not in a position to get the numbers for it on its own. And here an old ally was forced to leave,” Kumar said.

On the other hand, Kumar’s former comrade Lalu Prasad Yadav has called him a political opportunist. Yadav and Kumar have been allies and foes for decades. Yadav claims that the decision did not come as a shock as he did not expect better from Kumar.

“They (Vajpayee and Advani) never consulted me about Nitish. Else, I could have told them that he was a very scheming and opportunistic man. I knew Nitish would dump the BJP after extracting his pound of flesh. If he could backstab a large-hearted and simple person like me, he could do it to anyone,” Yadav said.
