Federal and Sindh governments remain determined to control the situation in Karachi, despite increasing political pressure. The metropolitan witnessed another chaotic day on Thursday when supporters of MQM brought their protest to streets and created havoc.

In an attempt to avoid such violent protests in future, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has directed the provincial law department to present the draft law proposing strict punishments for arsonists and rioters. The bill will be presented in the Sindh Assembly session beginning on September 18.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan discussed the law and order situation with CM Qaim and the MQM leadership on Thursday. Ch Nisar assured the MQM that the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi is not against any one particular party or group. He confirmed that only criminals had been arrested disregarding their political affiliations. The federal government has also directed the Rangers to be vigilant while making arrests and do not hurt women, children and elderly people.

Peace in Karachi is often associated with the need of large-scale deweaponisation in the city. Several investigation agencies and security officers have confirmed the presence of militant wings operated by certain influential political parties. Top police officials have stated that peace in Karachi cannot be maintained without destabilizing these militant wings.

“PPP and MQM are part of the problem. The infrastructure of the militant wings of the political parties must be dismantled for the sake of peace. Forget about peace in Karachi if such militant wings are not disbanded,” retired military officer and defence analyst Farooq Hameed Khan has alleged.
