The Delhi court this Monday morning recorded the statements of the former Telecom Minister of India, A Raja, and sixteen others who are facing the infamous trial against the 2G spectrum case with all of them denying charges against them leveled by the CBI. The special CBI Judge O P Saini initiated the recordings in the court by stating them as a “direct conversation” between the accused and the judge.

“Now the statement of accused will be recorded. It is a direct conversation between the accused and the judge…you (accused) may choose to reply or not reply,” was heard in the recording as it was heard in the court room. The stage for the recording of evidence of Raja and MP Kanimozhi with others accused was started earlier in the trial after the court had issued a draft questionnaire containing about 2000 questions to the accused. The questionnaire was made up of 824 pages.

Meanwhile, the special court which was also scheduled to record the statements of promoters of Essar Group and Loop Telecom, who are facing trial in a case arising out of the probe into the 2G spectrum scam and postponed it to the hearing which will be done on May 19th. “I think there will be no time for you today. The matter is adjourned for recording of statement of accused to May 19,” the judge said. Besides Raja and Kanimozhi, the former Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja’s erstwhile private secretary R K Chandolia, the Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka, the Unitech Ltd MD Sanjay Chandra, the Reliance ADAG executives, Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair are facing the trial in the 2G case.
