“This indeed is a proud moment for us. We are proud to prove to critics who had accused the lack of participation by the Chinese was due to them being unpatriotic. We have discovered that it had nothing to do with patriotism but perception,” said the federal police public relations department head ACP Datin Asmawati Ahmad while holding a press conference at the Bukit Aman this Thursday.

A special police recruitment drive held to encourage Chinese youths to sign up as rank-and-file personnel was a sweeping success with an overwhelming response from over 3,000 youths. With just 481 rank-and-file personnel and 1,493 Chinese officers currently serving in the115,000-strong force. This overwhelming response even shocked the police as the past recruitment drives did not prove to have a high success rate as only a few passed the final grade each time. “There was a lack of understanding by the community of a bright career as police personnel. All this was resolved during the exercise and now we have thousands who signed up In the exercise nationwide between March 2 and April 28,” said the ACP adding that the response, especially from the women was highly appreciated.

Over 8,000 Chinese youth were briefed and given an introduction on the career prospects within the police force. Federal police administration department deputy director SAC Saiful Azly Kamaruddin said of the 5,951 youths who had shown interest by requesting for enrolment forms, 3,314 comprising 2,094 men and 1,220 women aged between 18 and 28 had signed up.
