The DAP condemned the twin sedition charges against its state representative this Wednesday, saying that the charges were more of a political act rather than anything that was related to law..

The party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng declared that the charges against RSN Rayer were an “insult to democracy and the sanctity of the state assembly”, highlighting the first charge in which the Seri Delima assemblyman allegedly insulted Umno with the “celaka” epithet.  “This is the first time in Malaysian history when a political party was insulted is considered as seditious,” he told a press conference in George Town immediately after Rayer was charged at the Penang Sessions Court.

Rayer was charged in two separate courts this Wednesday morning for allegedly uttering seditious words with the phrase “celaka Umno” first at the state legislative assembly on the 20th of May and then  for uttering similar words in a speech at a park in Island Glades on the 22nd of May according to Malay Mail. “If this is considered seditious, then why the Attorney General [sic] did not take action against Barisan Nasional leaders who made similar criticisms against Pakatan Rakyat parties?” Lim asked, and added, “This is obviously double standards.” Lim, the Penang chief minister, had attended the court hearing with other DAP leaders as a mark of solidarity with Rayer. “The first one was for what he said in the state assembly and this is an insult to the democratic system and also the sanctity of the state assembly,” said Lim, “We will hold on to our spirit to fight this based in the federal constitution, democracy and justice.”
