The Education Minister Heng Swee Keat announced this Friday the three major shifts in education. He made these announcements during a debate on his ministry’s Budget.  The first major shift according to him is that the students should go beyond learning for grades and into mastery.

The news portal, Channels News Asia,  further informed that Heng said this also means matching students strengths to the opportunities available and for this he added the Ministry of Education (MOE) aims to have 100 Counsellors  serving all institutions of higher learning by the year 2017. He added that the second shift is that one should learn beyond school and throughout one’s life and thus for this the universities of Singapore will offer about 200 modular courses, while the polytechnics will offer 100 modular courses.

“You can now create your own learning pathways – build a portfolio of skills, just-in-time, tailored to your own needs, at your own pace. You can stack modules towards a qualification, or just choose relevant modules. It empowers each of us to take charge, direct our own learning and build our own unique skills map,” Channel News Asia quoted the Education Minister. It further informed about the third major shift which is to go beyond learning for work, to learning for life to which Heng noted that developing deep skills to succeed is important but life is also about developing an interest in one’s environment and community.
