Reportedly, the admission requirements of foreign students will be made easier and interim visas will be easily available for students in Australia. Michael Knight’s report, Strategic Review of the Student Visa Program 2011, seeks to boost Australia’s competitiveness to students whose numbers have plunged lately because of the strict visa procedures and the strong dollar.

According to Senator Chris Evans, the Minister for Tertiary Education, and Chris Bowen, the Immigration Minister, Mr. Knight’s proposal will be accepted with some necessary adjustments.

Mr. Evans says, “We’ve been keen to do what we can to assist them to be competitive and so we think these changes will very much assist them in the international market.”

The gist of the proposal is the need of ”streamlined visa processing”, which means treating all potential university students as a low-risk not considering their nationality. Moreover, looking into slackening restraints on how much financial support they have.

The report reads: “The absence of a clearly defined post-study work rights entitlement puts Australian universities at a very serious disadvantage compared to some of our major competitor countries.”
