Reportedly, the deputy commissioner Sir Ken Jones’s whereabouts are under surveillance besides the suspected the tapping of his and his wife’s phone calls.

On Monday, a report tabled in State Parliament by Ombudsman George Brouwer stated that the OPI believes former police officer Tristan Weston should never have been selected as a consultant to Police Minister Peter Ryan as it was an “irreconcilable conflict of interest”.

He also noted that across government he usually had the responsibility to conclude whether the actions of agencies violated the law, or were irrational, unfair, oppressive “or simply wrong”.

Brouwer said: “The use of telecommunication interceptions in Victoria, whether by the OPI or the police, is not subject to such scrutiny. In my view this could lead to a situation where an opportunity for the improper use or overuse of interception powers could go undetected.”

On Monday, Victoria’s Deputy Premier Peter Ryan agreed to examine the restrictions on phone taps.

He said: “We have expressed concerns about this previously. We do not have in Victoria anything at the front end which examines the basis upon which the warrants are issued in the first place.”

Moreover, Brouwer’s report discloses that the complaint against Sir Ken supposed he was the possible source of a leak to the media regarding the state’s duty of care about the death in prison of crime boss Carl Williams.
