Eight people died in the fire at a nursing home in Sydney’s north-west. The death toll rose after a 96-year-old woman passed away in hospital last night.

The elderly woman was rushed to Blacktown Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit in a fatal condition on Friday after the nursing home in Quakers Hill was blazed early that morning.

Almost 90 residents from the nursing home are being cared for in emergency accommodation around Sydney. A total of 32 people were injured in the blaze.

Moreover, a 35-year-old nurse, Roger Dean, has been charged with murder. He is due to appear in court again on Thursday. A NSW police spokesman said he would not speculate on whether Dean will face more murder charges but police does plan to lay additional charges against Dean.

List of victims who have been named:

Alma Smith, 73

Lola Bennett, 86

Ella Wood, 97

Urbana Alipio, 79
