UK’s Prime Minister Theresa May gave a very optimistic celebratory message to the nation as she vowed to unite the country after a year of Brexit divisions and forge a ‘bold new role’ for the UK in the world instead. In her remarks, May called for the people to ‘come together’ and help make a success of the decision to leave the European Union.

In her video message, PM May said there’s a lot to celebrate in 2016 and great opportunities to be seized after we leave the EU – as long as Britain is confident about the future. PM May’s message is being viewed as another attempt to smooth the divide between supporters and opponents of EU membership exposed by the June 23 vote. The Out campaign won the vote by a slight majority of 52 per cent this year.

In her first Christmas message, PM May stated that “coming together is also important for us as a country.” She pointed out that “as we leave the European Union we must seize a historic opportunity to forge a bold new role for ourselves in the world and to unite our country as we move forward into the future.” According to May, “with our international partners, we must work together to promote trade, increase prosperity and face the challenges to peace and security around the world.” Mrs May pointed out that there are many reasons to celebrate 2016, including the Queen’s 90th birthday and successes in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
