A Saint-Simon man charged with a weekend murder has been sent for a 30-day psychiatric assessment.

21-year-old Jean-Michel Gionet appeared in Caraquet Provincial Court this morning charged with the first degree murder of 39-year-old Stéphane Savoie of Saint-Simon, N.B. Mr. Savoie’s body was discovered in a home on Ancêtres Road on May 28, 2011.

Jean-Michel Gionet is scheduled to appear again in court in Caraquet on June 29, 2011.

Background

On Sunday, May 29, 2011, 21-year-old Jean-Michel Gionet from Saint-Simon, N.B., made a court appearance by telephone to face a first-degree murder charge in the death of a Saint-Simon man. The victim and the accused were known to each other.

Gionet will remain in custody until Monday, May 30, when he will appear in Caraquet Provincial Court. Search warrants were executed in a residence located on Ancêtres Road in Saint-Simon. Bathurst Major Crime Unit is investigating the case in conjunction with District 8 Acadian Peninsula RCMP and Bathurst Forensic Identification Section.

The investigation is ongoing.

Background:

On Saturday May 28, 2011, late in the morning, Caraquet RCMP members responded to a 911 call regarding a shooting that occurred in Saint-Simon, N.B.

When they arrived at the residence, located on Ancêtres Road, they discovered the body of a man in his thirties. The initial investigation suggests that the man was shot with a firearm.

The suspect, a man in his twenties, was arrested not long after by the police. He is presently in custody and will be appearing by telephone on Sunday.

The investigation is ongoing.
