14 year old boy charged for starting fires in Sudbury area

In the late afternoon Monday June 20th, Greater Sudbury Fire and Police responded to suspicious fires being set in the wooded area behind the Val – Est mall in Val Caron.

As fires were being put out, more fires were being started. In total, 8 separate fires were started within two hours in the same area. The Fire Department was required to extinguish them.

Some of the fires were located in close proximity to residences on Romeo St. as well as a school on Main St.

Police located a 14 year old male attempting to leave the area on his bicycle. When spoken to by police, a new fire was noticed in the area the youth had just come from.

After further investigation, officers learned the youth was responsible for all the fires. He has been charged with 8 counts of arson causing damage to property and is in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
