Axe wielding Whitby man gives up peacefully to police

Tactical Support officers assisted members from Central West Division at a Whitby apartment last night and arrested a barricaded male armed with an axe.

On Tuesday June 21, 2011 at approximately 7:30 p.m., Central West officers responded to an apartment complex on Craydon Road in Whitby in regards to a male suspect, armed with an axe, who had barricaded himself inside his apartment. A verbal argument between the suspect and the victims turned physical, at which time, the accused returned with an axe. The victims then fled into an adjacent apartment unit for safety while the suspect struck their apartment door with the axe. The accused then barricaded himself into his apartment and would not respond to investigating officers. The victim was not physically injured.

Central West officers maintained a perimeter, while applying for an arrest warrant to gain entry into the accused’s apartment. Tactical Support officers assisted with the warrant entry and facilitated the arrest of the accused, without incident. Officers seized an axe as evidence.

Michael BOURQUE, age 30 of Craydon Road in Whitby is charged with: Assault With a Weapon; Possession of Weapon Dangerous in Committing an Offence; Being Unlawfully at Large; Assault and Mischief Not Exceeding $5,000. The accused was held for a bail hearing.
