The Durham Regional Police Service is advising citizens in central Whitby that a male with a history of sexual offences involving children has recently relocated there.

William SHORTEN, age 44, has just moved to central Whitby. He is legally within his rights to live there and is under regular supervision from parole officers and the DRP’s Offender Management Unit (OMU).

He has been convicted of 12 sex offences involving children between the ages of five and 14. The offences occurred over a nine-year period between 1998 and 2007 and all of the offences occurred in Toronto. SHORTEN was not acquainted with any of his victims and the offences occurred in public places.

He is currently supervised by a Probation Officer and is bound by a number of probation conditions, prohibiting him from attending public parks or swimming pools when children are present, playgrounds, daycare facilities or arcades. He is also prohibited from employment or volunteer work that involves a position of trust or authority over children.

He has been out of custody since August, 2010 but has just recently moved to central Whitby. His exact location is not being released.

Parents are reminded to be aware of their children’s whereabouts at all times and to report any suspicious activity to police. Anyone with information of concern in relation to the activities of William SHORTEN is asked to contact Durham Regional Police Offender Management Unit.
