Man charged with attempted murder of Toronto police officer

On Thursday, August 25, 2011, at 12:30 a.m., 54 Division officers arrested a man in connection with an attempted murder investigation on a TPS officer.

It is alleged that:

– police stopped a vehicle in the area of 283 Pharmacy Avenue

– when officers approached the vehicle, the driver suddenly placed the vehicle in reverse and accelerated, pinning one of the officers under the door

– as the driver reversed at high speed, he dragged the officer approximately 75 metres

– the officer fell from the door and the driver continued accelerating until he flipped the car onto its side on the lawn of 283 Pharmacy Avenue

– the driver attempted to flee from the vehicle but was arrested a short distance away

Stephan Cummings, 18, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm,
2) Attempted Murder,
3) Fail to stop for Police (Flight cause bodily harm),
4) Fail to Comply with Probation.

He is scheduled to appear in court at College Park, on Thursday, August 25, 2011, room 501, at 10 a.m.
