The U.S News Best College list that began back in 1983, has released the rankings for 2012. The ratings for Top U.S. academic research institutions, the number 1 spot has been claimed by Harvard University followed by Princeton and Yale University. For leading Liberal Arts Colleges, Williamstown has been placed at number 1 followed by Amherst College and Swarthmore College.

By comparison from last year’s ratings, there is not much difference in the first three spots. The rankings rate 1400 schools from across the country.

The criteria for these ratings is based on student test scores, admissions selectivity and peer evaluations.

Peter Van Buskirk, former admissions dean at Franklin & Marshall College speaking about the annual ratings released by this magazine has said, “By presuming to ‘score’ colleges against each other, ranking lists tend to be enticing illusions that often distract students from thinking about the things that are most important to them as they contemplate their educational futures. You need to remain focused on the three W’s: who you are, why you want to go to college, and what you hope to get out of the college experience.”
