Canada has finally decided to re-open its embassy in Libya, says Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird. The Foreign Affairs Minister added that a small group of diplomats is in Tripoli analyzing the state of affairs.

Baird said: “Having now taken stock of the situation we’re starting the work of refurbishing and securing our embassy in Tripoli.”

Moreover, he added the Canadian diplomats are laying down the structure of an embassy at a short-term site awaiting the original location to be re-opened. Former ambassador Sandra McCardell has been reportedly leading the group of diplomats in Libya.

John Baird also said the group is mediating with officers in Libya’s National Transitional Council, and setting up for the advent of a superior complement of diplomats who will work on the continuation of trade relations between the two countries.

He said: “Canada is proud to have punched above its weight by leading the way in providing humanitarian, diplomatic and military support to the Libyan people and their cause. We now expect a new government to fulfill its commitments to freedom, to democracy, human rights and the rule of law.”
