21-year-old Cody Legebokoff has been charged with the murders of three women since 2009.

He was taken into custody last week at the Prince George Regional Correctional Centre where he is awaiting trial in the death of Loren Leslie of Fraser Lake. According to RCMP, Legebokoff is also accused for the murder of Jill Stuchenko, 35, and Cynthia Maas, 23.

RCMP Inspector Brendan Fitzpatrick said that police is not relating Monday’s developments to the Highway of Tears case about the 18 missing women since 1969 along a 50-kilometre stretch of northern road between Prince George and Prince Rupert.

He said: “We were very alive to the possibility. However, through forensics and pure mathematics, there’s no nexus between Mr. Legebokoff and the Highway of Tears victims… He would have been barely able to drive a car at that time.”

Legebokoff was brought to court on Monday. The charges follow a 10-month inquiry dubbed Project E-Prelude, which came to occupy police resources across Canada and the United States.

Insp. Fitzpatrick avoided getting into details about what led to a breakthrough in the case, but said search warrants were executed at two Prince George houses related to Mr. Legebokoff and that the vehicle he was driving when Ms. Leslie was murdered in November, 2010 has also been closely examined over several weeks.
