The Ontario government has ordered its 24 colleges to reconsider the proposed wage hikes for their presidents and other executives after they suggested as much as 55% in pay raise. Minister for Advanced Education, Deputy Premier and MPP for London North Centre, Minister Deb Matthews, completely rejected the proposals on Thursday and pointed out that the comparators used by the colleges to justify the requests were unreasonable.
In her remarks, Matthews explained that “what they were supposed to have done is identify a number of comparators and then the maximum compensation was to be no more than the 50th percentile, the midpoint. The problem I have is I don’t think the comparators were the right comparators.” She also pointed out that “they were using hospitals and universities – and in one case they were using a comparator that was ten times bigger than the college itself. It’s not in the spirit of the legislation, it’s not in the letter of the legislation, so I’ve asked them to go back and they’ve agreed to do that.”
Fanshawe reportedly compared itself to the University of Guelph, University of Ottawa, University of Waterloo, York University and the London Health Sciences Centre. However, Matthews has revealed to have rejected the demands and asked the colleges to come up with reasonable proposal. She also warned that if they fail to provide reasonable proposals that meet the legislative requirements, then they will remain frozen at 2011 levels.
