A 41-year-old Whitby man was fatally injured when his vehicle lost control on Dundas Street West in Whitby last night.

On Wednesday December 21, 2011 at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers from the Central West Division were called to the scene of motor vehicle collision involving a white van that had struck a tree.

A White GMC Safari van, driven by a 41-year-old Whitby man, was travelling westbound on Dundas Street in the curb lane, approaching the intersection at Cochrane Street, when witnesses reported seeing the van leave the roadway, mount the curb and strike a tree on the south side of the roadway. The impact caused the shelving and tools in the van to shift forward, thus crushing the driver in his seat, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Members of the Durham Regional Police Traffic Services Branch, Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene to conduct an investigation. The roadway was closed while evidence was collected at the scene. Police believe alcohol may be a factor in this collision.
