Alleged killer of a Toronto policeman will go on trial next January. Richard Kachkar, 45, is accused of running over Toronto police Sgt. Ryan Russell, 35, a year ago.

The trial will begin Jan. 7, 2013.

Kachkar was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder after he ran over Russell near Avenue and Davenport roads on Jan. 12, 2011.

Kachkar, a drifter who moved between Toronto and St. Catharines, Ont., was shot and wounded by police when they arrested him after Russell was hit.

According to the Toronto Police Association, Russell, who was promoted to the rank of sergeant merely six months before his death, was the first Toronto officer to die in the line of duty since 1994.

He is survived by his wife Christine and son Nolan.

When Sgt. Russell passed away, he was honored with a public funeral that was attended by thousands of people, including police officers from across North America.
